Surviving the winter freeze

Snow Snow Snow

We always want a white christmas. Playing in the snow, building snow men and making snow angels but…..I’d rather be riding my horse!

Like many others I too have been stuck in doors whilst my horses wonder round a white field resembling Michellin men!  Bored? yes I am. So I am now fighting back and after 4 hours of breaking up the school with a shavings fork to form a light non slippery dusting of sand I have successfully ridden my 2 horses 4 days on the trot. Though it has been more like on the Walk!!

I found myself trying to convince Zoe that walking was the safest option whilst she had other plans yesterday. 17 laps of canter later and vast amounts of white foam, my bay mare transformed into an ice skating Coloured acrobat!  Little madam. Fingers crossed we’ll keep all our toes on the ground today but as I type this the snow has set in so less ice skating more skiing today I think!

Wish me luck.

Horse Skiing!

I have given into the fact that the snow is going to be around for while and therefore have taken up horse Skiing!

Ridiculous? Absolutely….but terrific fun. I wasn’t intending on skiing but having watched both horse’s perform beautifull acrobatics in their snow filled field and remain upright that I decided i’d give Zoe a lunge.  She found this rather hard work and the bucking soon stopped.  Whilst cooling her down I found that if she walked in a straight line and I stood directly behind she was at times pulling me.

So the seed had been planted. I quickly rugged her back up and switched attention to my more sensible horse Rory. I then headed out down the drive towards the roads.  I found that by keeping him walking on the powder snow and my feet on the smooth almost ice like snow in the road I could glide with very little friction. I was Skiing! Luckily the road outside my yard is hardly used and as of yesterday it is now a ski slope.

So…if you’re feeling brave enough why don’t you have a go!
